Whitechapel Gallery releases a host of new prints

The Whitechapel gallery has released a whole range of new prints recently for our delight and delectation, and mighty fine they are.  Nip over to their shop to have a look at the new editions which include releases from Jeremy Deller, Jaime Gili (pictured), Simon Patterson, Donald Urquhart, Peter Peri and Mark Titchner.  Also they have released a print by Saatchi favourite Chantal Joffe which is a quite stunning screen print.  That doesn't seem to be on the site yet but they were showing it at multiplied so it must be on the way shortly.

I'm back

Yes I know it has been a bit shaky and yes I know I should really keep the content of this more up to date but after a diet of art in October - Frieze, Multiplied, Moniker, Hells Half Acre etc. I feel newly enthused to post more on the blog.  Hope you enjoy it.

Although I will continue to post mostly on the contemporary art scene in London I also plan to give you the reader heads up on new contemporary art editions being released, especially in the run up to xmas.  xx

Affordable Art fair review

So I went today and thoroughly enjoyed the electic mix of work there, despite there being a number of stands I just walked straight past knowing they would not be to my taste.

Standout pieces of the show, in my opinion were by Katrin Fredriks on the future tense stand (pictured).   I think this artist is very talented and look forward to seeing more of her stuff in the future.

I also really liked a lot of the work on the Victor Felix stand, especially one work by Alex Kanevsky.

Thirdly I have always liked Vanessa Smith who exhibits with Mark Jason gallery and the works at the show were no different.

Affordable Art fair this weekend

This weekend sees the affordable art fair in Battersea Park, where all artworks are under £3000.  It's a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, although it can be very busy indeed.  I also find quite a few of the stands quite dull.

Time out banksy poster

Time out magazine in London will feature Banksy on the front cover.  The magazine hits newstands on 2 March 2010 and you can buy a poster of the cover artwork here.

All the details below

The renowned, yet elusive, graffiti artist Banksy has created the cover of the March 4th issue of Time Out London magazine.

Through strong links with the magazine and in anticipation of his forthcoming cinematic debut, 'Exit Through the Gift Shop', Banksy himself approached Time Out. This photo shoot, a mixture of self-portraiture and his trademark use of spraypaint, is unlike anything he's ever done for a magazine before and may never be repeated. In addition to the cover, Banksy conducted a rare and revealing interview with Time Out London's Visual Arts Editor Ossian Ward.

Exclusive to the Time Out shop, we have printed a large poster (682mmm x 515mm) of this week's magazine cover. Our cover posters always sell out quickly - so order this set now before the supply runs out.

Own the collectors edition poster, only available here for £10 +PP

(Contrary to some internet rumours these street posters are NOT signed!)

Case at the signal gallery

I'm not a huge fan of the photo-realist spraycan artist Case from the Maclaim crew but he does have a loyal following and I have to acknowledge the ability of the guy.  Make your own mind up by seeing his show at the signal gallery. The show is being run in conjunction with my good friend Frankie from CampBarbossa.  You should check out frankie's website if you haven't had a chance recently.  The show is on until 6 March 2010.  Details below.

Signal Gallery in association with Campbarbossa, are pleased to announce the forthcoming solo show by the renowned German artist Andreas Von Chrzanowski AKA ‘Case’.  Following on from successful solo shows in Los Angeles and his homeland, his first London show will be an exciting event. As well as producing works for the gallery, Case will be painting a number of large street pieces across East London.

Case has been producing spectacular street pieces for a decade, primarily as a founder member of the celebrated German street art group, the Maclaim Crew. Specialising in a heightened form of photorealism, several of the artists in the Clan have moved onto working individually and producing fine art works for the Gallery. Case has taken this route too, to great acclaim. Developing the pioneering photorealist spray paint style of the group further in his own works, Case has produced a series of stunning detailed paintings that have made his work much sought after by galleries and collectors alike.

In his solo show at Signal Gallery, ‘Never Odd Or Even’, Case is taking his inspiration from the fantastical world of Alice Through The Looking Glass.  This imaginative landscape, where nothing is quite what it seems to be, suits Case’s style like a glove, enabling him to let himself go with his imagery. Using characters and scenarios from the story he is able to anchor his paintings to a familiar illogical thread. Quite the equal to Lewis Carroll in his bizarre view of reality already, the combination of the two creative forces promises to produce fireworks.

Based in Frankfurt, Case studied art restoration and conservation and has a broad knowledge of art history and painting techniques. Despite this he has moved away from traditional painting mediums and is considered to be one of the leading exponents of photorealist spray painting - indeed he is credited for developing the style and methods in the first place. His work has been exhibited in galleries Internationally including several prestigious group shows here in London.  He is one of the new bright lights on the Urban Contemporary Art scene, with not only the technique to produce gallery quality works, but with a great ‘street’ reputation to boot.

An exceptional opportunity to collect an important work by one of the world’s most influential artists. Louise Bourgeois Serpentine Gallery 40th Anniversary Limited Edition.
On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the Serpentine Gallery is delighted to announce an exclusive signed, limited edition print, generously donated to the Gallery by the internationally acclaimed Louise Bourgeois, an artist approaching her 100th year.
Louise Bourgeois
Louise Bourgeois has been a central figure in the Serpentine’s 40 years of world class exhibition-making. In 1998 the Gallery staged a landmark exhibition of recent works, many of which later formed central parts of Louise Bourgeois, the seminal retrospective which toured to Tate Modern in 2007. In 1985 the Serpentine held an exhibition of drawing and sculpture by Bourgeois and Alice Aycock, which attracted a record number of visitors to the Gallery.
Bourgeois began drawing as a child. She explains: ‘Drawings are thought feathers, they are ideas that I seize in mid flight and put down on paper. All my thoughts are visual. But the subjects of drawings are often not translated until several years later. As a result, there are lots of things that appear in drawings that are never explored further.’ In the 1940s, Bourgeois worked at Atelier 17 with Stanley William Hayter, one of the 20th century’s most important printmakers, where she further explored her interest in the drawn line making etchings and engravings. The figure of Janus, the Roman god depicted with two heads facing in opposite directions, references what the artist describes as the ‘kind of polarity we represent.’ The figure is a recurring motif both in Bourgeois’ sculptures and works on paper.
Louise Bourgeois was born in France in 1911 and is now regarded as one of the most important artists of the last 70 years. Living and working in New York, Bourgeois has been the subject of solo exhibitions across the globe. Between 2007 and 2009, her major retrospective has been exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC and the Serpentine Gallery.

Faile and Bast at Laz

I'm very excited to see the faile and bast show that opened on friday at Laz.  By all accounts it is a great show and should be something very different.  Here is the blurb:

To kick-start the 2010 programme, Lazarides is proud to announce that Faile, Brooklyn’s infamous collaborative duo are bringing their unique vision to London. Featuring long-time collaborator, Bast, the two floors of Lazarides Greek Street gallery will be taken over for a truly experiential exhibition.

Haunts of 80s populist culture inspire the distinctive conceptual show formed by signature elements from Faile and Bast's career. Interaction with the Arcade installation will be encouraged among gallery visitors along with the added bonus of being able to purchase Faile & Bast artworks for a mere £2, unless that is, you want to use them to play the game, intrigued?

And, in conjunction with the exhibition in Greek Streeet, over the road Lazarides’ Rathbone gallery presents 'A Decade Of Faile' featuring selected highlights of their work from 1999 - 2009. Come down and check out the madness at Greek St and take a fun lesson in Faile history at Rathbone.

For more information please read the press release.
